What if how you structure an application didn't have to dictate how you deploy it? Traditional microservice architectures often treat architectural separation and physical distribution as the same problem. Orleans takes a different approach, allowing applications to be implemented as loosely coupled components while keeping deployment topology flexible. In this session, we'll draw on our experience building game backends and other services with Orleans to explore how systems can evolve from a single process to multi-cluster and multi-region deployments without changing the underlying programming model. We'll discuss the realities of latency in globally distributed systems and along the way examine how Orleans can reduce communication costs, simplify operations, and challenge common assumptions about microservice design.
